Exploring the Charm of Salem

Salem is without a doubt one of the most fun cities to visit. Its vast history and bountiful options of things to do and see make it a must-visit destination. The downtown area is a vibrant mix of shops, attractions, and restaurants that stretch across Essex, Central, Washington, and Church Streets. But wait, there’s so much more to Salem than just downtown!

The Hidden Gems of Salem

There are plenty of micro neighborhoods to explore, and you’ll want to visit them all. Our series will help you discover fantastic shops, attractions, and restaurants that you can explore during your visit.

Part two of this series takes us to Pickering Wharf. This area runs from the main intersection in front of Destination Salem (Derby, Washington, and Congress Streets) in the Seaport District all the way down to the iconic House of the Seven Gables. Trust me, it’s worth your time to stroll through this charming area.

A Brief History of Pickering Wharf

Pickering Wharf is named after the Pickering Oil Company, which dates back to around 1838. They operated out of Union Wharf, the previous name for the wharf. The development of Pickering Wharf began when the Pickering Oil Company sold the land at 50% of its assessed value. In return, they received permission to relocate their oil tanks further down Derby Street, near the New England Power Plant.

The Salem Five Cents Saving Bank, along with three partners, purchased the property and invested $15 million to develop it into a mixed-use design. This plan included condominiums, restaurants, retail stores, and a marina on the 5.5-acre waterfront site. Construction started around 1977, and Pickering Wharf officially opened in 1979.

Interestingly, there's a long-standing belief that the Pickering Oil Company descends from John Pickering, who arrived in Salem in the early 1630s. However, an exact connection has never been confirmed. It’s thought that George W. Pickering, the founder of Pickering Oil, was related to John Pickering.

The Pickering House, located at 18 Broad Street, housed ten successive generations of the Pickering family, including Colonel Timothy Pickering, who played a significant role in the American Revolution. The Pickering family has been integral to Salem’s growth over the centuries.

Dining and Shopping at Pickering Wharf

Some of the first restaurants at Pickering Wharf included the Chase House (now known as Longboards) and Victoria Station (now Finz). Other shops included Peter Barter Flowers, Colonial Gifts, Bewitching Yarn, Country Curtains, Crabtree & Evelyn, Pappagallo's Shoes, Putnam Pantry Candies, Regina Pizzeria, and Stoned Elephant Gifts. The aim was to create an 18th-century shopping village.

Today, Pickering Wharf and the surrounding area boast over 40 shops, restaurants, and attractions. It’s a beautiful spot to enjoy views of Salem’s historic harbor and the Salem Maritime National Historic Park.
