Salem in November: Smaller Crowds, What's Open and What to Do
Is Salem worth visiting in November? What's still open after Halloween, what changes, and how to plan a calmer trip.

Halloween is over, and honestly? November might be the best month to actually see Salem. The crowds thin out fast, parking gets easier, and you can walk Essex Street without shuffling. Here's what to expect.
What changes after Halloween
- The crowds drop off. The big October weekends are over, and weekdays especially are calm.
- Driving and parking get easier. The weekend Essex Street closures run through November 1, then end for the year.
- The Haunted Happenings Marketplace wraps up. Its final dates run through November 1.
- Some attractions cut back. Several haunted houses and pop-ups are October-only, and others switch to shorter winter hours (the Witch House, for example, moves to Thursday–Sunday, 12–4 pm, from November 16). Check hours before you go.
What's still open and worth doing
- Peabody Essex Museum. Open Thursday to Monday, 10 am to 5 pm; closed Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thanksgiving. Admission is $25 for adults, free for Salem residents and anyone under 16. On view this November: The Salem Witch Trials 1692, Salem Stories, East India Marine Hall and Isamu Noguchi: "I am not a designer" (through January 3, 2027).
- Pioneer Village. The living-history village at 98 West Ave stays open weekends through November 15 (Saturdays and Sundays, 12–4 pm).
- The free history. The Old Burying Point and the Salem Witch Trials Memorial on Charter St, the Witch House from the street, the Custom House on the waterfront and Old Town Hall in Derby Square. See our free things to do.
- Walking tours. Tours keep running after Halloween, usually with fewer departures and much more availability than October. See our walking tours.
- The waterfront. Pickering Wharf, Derby Wharf and Salem Willows are at their quietest.
- Restaurants without the wait. No two-hour October lines. See where to eat.
Tips for a November visit
- Dress for cold. It's coastal New England. Bring layers and gloves for evening tours.
- Check hours. Smaller shops and attractions may switch to winter hours after Halloween.
- Take the train anyway. It's still the easiest way in from Boston. See Boston to Salem.
Is Salem worth visiting in November?
If you want the history, the museums and the walkable old town without the October crowds, yes. If you're coming for the full Halloween spectacle, costumes and parties, that's an October thing.
